Artist Will Kemp - All art work available, originals and signed limited edition prints. Will is one of the most exciting new talents working in the genre of landscape art. His instinctive and spontaneous approach to landscape painting is underpinned by classical 17th Century techniques.
His vibrant landscapes have great immediacy and appeal but maintain their strong connection with the contemporary world. This duality is achieved via a surprisingly minimalist technique, as Will strives to encapsulate the form, colour and tone of a subject in a single brush stroke. This leads to an economy of line and form which lends each composition a deceptive air of simplicity.
Will's preferred medium is oil paint. He sees it as a contextual tool referring to the heritage of the old masters, but also loves the simple joys afforded by the smell of turpentine and the deep buttery colours. On occasion he also employs acrylics for under paintings or if he is working with a thicker impasto.
Will was born in Kent in 1977. After completing an art foundation course in Kent he graduated from the University of Staffordshire with a BA(Hons) degree in Fine Art. He has always felt drawn to the
coast - from Cornwall for the clarity and quality of the light, to Scotland for its rawness and untouched beauty. There is a personal element of nostalgia for him here; his father is a garden designer
and used to create amazing sand sculptures on the beaches around the Kent coast so Will always has fond memories of the sea. He has also long had a love affair with the sensuous colours of Italy, and after graduation travelled for some months on what he describes as a 'renaissance pilgrimage'.
Now based in Cheshire, Will exhibits locally and nationally, including at such prestigious venues as the Mall Galleries in London and at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters exhibition. He has won an
impressive array of awards including the Sentinal the Nadfas and the Webberly's painting prizes.
